A BRIEF HISTORY OF HUMAN JUKEBOXES:
Human Jukeboxes have been in use for ritualistic celebrations and rights of passage since they were first invented by the aztecs over seven centuries ago. Their universal appeal meant that they were heavily traded across the ancient world via land and shipping routes. Examples of early designs have been found from the cave paintings of Australian aboriginals to the Viking 'graffiti' in the cairns of northern Scotland. The first record of their arrival in Europe comes from the Irish translations of the holy scriptures and we know from parchment records that they were horse drawn and usually contained four or more musicians. The Church however were quick to dispel any association with the practice as it was 'much too heavily laden with grog and encouraging of lust and easy virtue.' Jukeboxes then fell out of favour in the Christian world and were not seen in public again until the late 20th century after their re-birth as the wall or floor mounted automated units that we know today. The two human Jukeboxes available here are reconstructions of the original designs although the deer skin and bamboo have been replaced with plastic and aluminium and the lutes and bagpipes with electric guitars and turntables. These units now represent the last of an ancient ritual performance which has held captive audiences across the globe for almost eight hundred years. Maker Mr Joseph Furlong owns the copyright and trademarks which have been held by a secret collective of misogynists since they were driven underground by cardinal solomites during his puritanical purge of celtic rituals in the 16th Century. Joseph now lives with his family in Swansea where he spends much of his time gardening in his JCB. |
